The Dark Knight

The Dark Knight is a 2008 American superhero film co-written and directed by Christopher Nolan. Based on the DC Comics character Batman, the film is a sequel to 2005's Batman Begins. Christian Bale reprises the lead role. Batman's primary conflicts in the film include his fight against his arch-nemesis the Joker (Heath Ledger) and his rivalry with district attorney Harvey Dent (Aaron Eckhart) for the affections of assistant D.A. Rachel Dawes (Maggie Gyllenhaal). For his conception of the film, Nolan was inspired by the Joker's first two appearances in the comics and Batman: The Long Halloween. The Dark Knight was filmed primarily in Chicago, as well as in several other locations in the United States, the United Kingdom, and Hong Kong. The director used an IMAX camera to film six major action sequences, including the Joker's first appearance in the film. Warner Bros. created a viral marketing campaign for The Dark Knight, developing promotional websites and trailers highlighting screenshots of Heath Ledger as the Joker. After Ledger's death in January 2008, however, the studio refocused its promotional campaign. The film was released on July 16, 2008 in Australia, on July 18, 2008 in North America, and on July 24, 2008 in the United Kingdom. Prior to its box office debut in North America, record numbers of advance tickets were sold for The Dark Knight. The film has broken multiple box office records, and achieved an overall approval rating of 94% on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes.

Iron Man

Iron Man is a 2008 superhero film based on the Marvel Comics character of the same name. Directed by Jon Favreau, the film stars Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark, a billionaire industrialist and master engineer who builds a powered exoskeleton and becomes the technologically advanced superhero, Iron Man. Gwyneth Paltrow plays his personal assistant Pepper Potts, Terrence Howard plays military liaison James Rhodes and Jeff Bridges plays the villainous Obadiah Stane who becomes Iron Monger.

The film was in development from 1990 at Universal Studios, 20th Century Fox, and New Line Cinema, before Marvel Studios reacquired the rights in 2006. Marvel put the project in production as their first self-financed film. Favreau signed on as director, aiming for a naturalistic feel, and he chose to shoot the film primarily in California, rejecting the East Coast setting of the comics to differentiate the film from numerous superhero movies set in New York City-esque environments. During filming, the actors were free to create their own dialogue because preproduction was focused on the story and action. Rubber and metal versions of the armors, created by Stan Winston's company, were mixed with computer-generated imagery to create the title character.

Marvel and Paramount Pictures, the distributor, planned a $50 million marketing campaign for the film, which is modeled on Paramount's successful promotion of Transformers (2007); Hasbro and Sega will sell merchandise, and product placement deals were made with Audi, Burger King, LG and 7-Eleven. Reviews have been overwhelmingly positive, particularly praising Downey's performance. The film's stars have signed on for two sequels, the first of them scheduled for release on April 30, 2010, and Downey also cameos as Stark in the upcoming The Incredible Hulk.

Love in the Time of Cholera

Love in the Time of Cholera (Spanish: ''El amor en los tiempos del cólera'', 1985) is a novel by Gabriel García Márquez about a fifty-year love triangle between Fermina Daza, Florentino Ariza and Doctor Juvenal Urbino set in the late 19th century and the first decades of the 20th century (roughly 1880 to 1930). The novel, a tale of unrequited love, explores the idea that suffering for love is a kind of nobility.

Spoiler Warning is the following:

The novel begins as Juvenal Urbino comes upon the body of an old friend and chess partner, Jeremiah de Saint-Amour. Jeremiah killed himself at the age of sixty to avoid growing old.

Upon returning home, Urbino falls to his death after trying to retrieve the household parrot from the branches of a mango tree, leaving his wife, Fermina Daza, a widow. After the funeral, Florentino Ariza approaches Fermina Daza and declares once more his vow of everlasting love. She is furious at him and orders him out of the house.

The novel then flashes back and relates the intertwining stories of Fermina Daza, Florentino Ariza, and Juvenal Urbino, following Fermina and Florentino from childhood to old age. As children, they had had a short and intense epistolary romance. After Fermina returns from a trip to her hometown, she recognizes her relationship with Florentino as naïve and is filled with disenchantment. She rejects him, leaving him obsessed and sick with love.

The middle of the novel tracks both of their lives: Florentino Ariza harbors an all-consuming obsession for Fermina Daza (see Pierre Abélard). He intends to stay a virgin until they are together again, but soon finds himself using sex to mitigate the pain of their separation, engaging in 622 affairs. Fermina Daza, forced by her father Lorenzo, marries Juvenal Urbino at the age of twenty-one and becomes a respectable wife to him.

The novel then returns to the beginning when Juvenal Urbino dies and Florentino Ariza repeats his vow. They resume an exchange of letters, building a stronger relationship than the first. The novel ends when Florentino Ariza and Fermina Daza are on a river voyage together and find themselves in love. Fermina fears the scandal this will bring, so the Captain of the ship raises the yellow flag of cholera, dooming them to exile but also to be together forever.

Awake is a 2007 thriller/drama film written and directed by Joby Harold and set for release on November 30, 2007. It stars Hayden Christensen and Jessica Alba. The film is rated R for language, an intense disturbing situation, and brief drug use.

Spoiler Warning is the following:

The Plot - The story focuses on a man named Clay (Christensen) who is in love with a woman named Sam (Alba) but is unwilling to tell his mother of their relationship. We later find out this is due to Sam being his mother's personal assistant. Clay suffers from a heart condition which requires a heart transplant to be carried out by a doctor who previously saved his life and is now his good friend. However during the surgery he encounters "anesthetic awareness" and finds himself awake and aware, but paralyzed. To escape the pain, Clay has an out of body experience and uncovers some sinister plots. Meanwhile Sam must wrestle with her own demons as a drama unfolds around them.

Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End

Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End is a 2007 adventure film, the third in the Pirates of the Caribbean series. Gore Verbinski directed the film, as he did with the previous two. It was shot in two shoots during 2005 and 2006, the former simultaneously with the preceding film, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest. The plot follows the crew of the Black Pearl rescuing Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp), from Davy Jones' Locker, and then preparing to fight the East India Trading Company, led by Cutler Beckett (Tom Hollander) and Davy Jones (Bill Nighy), who plan to extinguish piracy. The film was released in English-speaking countries on May 24, 2007 after Disney opted to move the release date to a day earlier than originally planned. Critical reviews were mixed, but At World's End was a box office hit, becoming the most successful film of the year.

Actor of Note: Gary Oldman

Leonard Gary Oldman (born March 21, 1958 in London, England) is an award-winning English actor, writer and director who is perhaps best known to film audiences as Count Dracula in Francis Ford Coppola's romance-horror blockbuster Dracula. Oldman initially came to prominence for his portrayal of the Sex Pistols' ill-fated bassist Sid Vicious in Sid & Nancy, and has since garnered critical acclaim for his diversity of roles and mastery of world accents[1]. As well as Sid Vicious, Oldman has portrayed a number of significant historical figures including composer Ludwig Van Beethoven in Immortal Beloved and Lee Harvey Oswald in JFK. In recent years Oldman is perhaps most recognised for playing Hannibal Lecter's equally malevolent nemesis, Mason Verger, in Hannibal, Sirius Black in the Harry Potter film series and Commissioner James Gordon in Christopher Nolan's Batman film series. Oldman collected the Saturn Award for Best Actor for his performance in the title role of Dracula, and received an Emmy Award nomination for his guest appearance in a 2001 episode of Friends. His 1997 foray into writing and directing, Nil By Mouth, won the 1997 BAFTA Award for Best British Film.

Actor of Note: Richard Harris

Richard St. John Harris (1 October 193025 October 2002) was an Irish actor, singer and songwriter. He was featured on stage and in many films, and was perhaps best known for the film role of King Arthur in Camelot (1967) , as Oliver Cromwell in Cromwell and for the portrayal of Albus Dumbledore in Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone (2001) and Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (2002), his last film. He also played a British aristocrat and prisoner in A Man Called Horse (1970). Harris made his film debut in 1958 in the film Alive and Kicking. He had a memorable bit part in The Guns of Navarone as an Australian air force pilot who reports that blowing up the "bloody guns" of the title is impossible by air. For his role in Mutiny on the Bounty, despite being virtually unknown, he insisted on third billing, behind Trevor Howard and Marlon Brando. His first star turn was in the 1963 film This Sporting Life, as a bitter young coal miner, Frank Machin, who becomes an acclaimed rugby league footballer. For his role as Frank Machin, Harris won the 1963 award for best actor at the Cannes film festival. He also won acclaim and notice for his leading role (with Charlton Heston) in Sam Peckinpah's famous "lost masterpiece" Major Dundee (1965), as an Irish immigrant-turned-Confederate cavalryman during the American Civil War. He appeared as King Arthur in the film adaptation of Camelot (in which he was cast despite his limited singing range, just like Richard Burton), and proceeded to appear on stage in that role for years. He recorded several albums, one ("A Tramp Shining") included the seven-minute hit song written by Jimmy Webb, "MacArthur Park" (which Harris mispronounced as "MacArthur's Park"); that song reached #2 on the United States Billboard magazine pop chart, while topping several charts in Europe, in the summer of 1968. A second all-Webb composed album, "The Yard Went on Forever", was released in 1969. He also wrote one of the songs, There are Too Many Saviours on My Cross, considered to be a criticism of the sectarian violence in Northern Ireland. Some memorable performances followed, among them a role as a reluctant police informer in The Molly Maguires (1970) alongside Sean Connery. In 1971 he starred in the film Man in the Wilderness and in the low-budget Orca in 1977. Harris achieved a form of cult status for his role as mercenary tactician Rafer Janders in the 1978 film The Wild Geese. Also, in 1973, Harris wrote a highly acclaimed book of poetry, titled I, In The Membership Of My Days which was later released in record format with him reciting his poems. By the end of the 1980s, Harris had gone a long time without a significant film role. He was familiar with the stage plays of fellow Irishman John B. Keane, and had heard that one of them, The Field, was being adapted for film by director Jim Sheridan. Sheridan was working with actor Ray McAnally on the adaptation, intending to feature McAnally in the lead role (Bull McCabe). When McAnally died suddenly during initial preparations for the film, Harris began a concerted campaign to be cast as McCabe. This campaign eventually succeeded, and the film version of The Field (which also starred Tom Berenger) was released in 1990. Harris earned an Academy Award nomination for his portrayal.

I, Robot

I, Robot is a science fiction film filmed in Vancouver, British Columbia, but produced in the United States released on July 16, 2004, attributed to Isaac Asimov's Robot Series, especially a short-story collection of the same name. It is technically based on Hardwired, a spec script by Jeff Vintar, but bears some significant resemblance to a pre-Asimov, 1939 classic sci-fi short story, "I, Robot" by Eando Binder, after which the Asimov collection was named by its publisher against Asimov's wishes. Some of Asimov's ideas about robots were added to Vintar's script after the film's producers acquired the rights to the anthology title, although the plot is not directly based on any particular story or group of stories by Asimov. The Binder story concerns a sapient humanoid robot arrested and placed on trial for the murder of its creator.

Actor of Note: Robert Powell

Robert Powell (born June 1, 1944), is a well-known English television and film actor, known for the title role in Jesus of Nazareth and the fictional secret agent Richard Hannay. Born in Salford, Lancashire, and educated at Manchester Grammar School and Manchester University, Powell took up acting while an undergraduate. He had a small role in the original version of The Italian Job playing one of the drivers, but had to wait a few years for his first success, in the BBC's sci-fi series, Doomwatch in 1970. Having been at his request killed off in the last episode of the original series, Powell became a pin-up and a household name, following up with starring roles in several BBC serials, including Sentimental Education and Jude the Obscure. For several years, Powell continued as a television regular, with occasional forays into film, notably as Mahler in 1974. He also notably played Captain Walker in the 1975 Ken Russell film version of Tommy. His role had no lines at all and apart from a few early scenes during the overture with Ann-Margret, he is primarily seen through the mind of his son as played by Barry Winch (Young Tommy) and Roger Daltrey. In one of those scenes Captain Walker is shown in a crucifixion pose. He then played Jesus Christ in the series Jesus of Nazareth following a successful second audition with Franco Zeffirelli. The series had an all star cast, such as Sir Laurence Olivier, Christopher Plummer, Rod Steiger and James Mason. In 1975, Powell married his girlfriend, the Pan's People dancer Babs Lord. This happened quickly and quietly, partly due to the fact he was about to start filming for Jesus of Nazareth, and partly to overcome problems if she flew out to see him on location in Morocco. Both felt it would be easier if they were married. On 23 November 1977, they had their first son, Barney. He later went on to become known as Brixton Holloway. In 1978, Powell took the leading role of Richard Hannay in the third film version of The Thirty-Nine Steps. It met with modest success, and critics compared Powell's portrayal of John Buchan's character favorably with his predecessors. His characterisation did indeed prove to be enduring, as almost ten years later a television series entitled simply Hannay appeared with Powell back in the role. It ran for two seasons, and was based on Buchan's other Hannay stories. In 1980 he appeared in the film Harlequin playing the Harlequin of the title who seems to have the power to cure the son of a powerful politician. Powell then agreed to a request from his old friend and golf partner, comedian Jasper Carrott, taking the part of an incompetent detective in a succession of sketches that formed part of Carrott's television series. Several full-length episodes of The Detectives followed. In 1992, Powell starred in the New Zealand World War I film Chunuk Bair, as Sgt Maj Frank Smith. Nowadays Powell appears in person less often, but he is heard, on voice-overs, advertisements, and as a narrator of television programmes such as Great Crimes and Trials. He has also narrated many audio books, including abridged versions of many of Alan Garner's books, and several abridged novels for 'The Talking Classics Collection'. From early 2005 he has been appearing in the UK TV soap, Holby City .On October 29, 2001 a state-of-the-art theatre named after him was opened at the University of Salford.

Letters from Iwo Jima (Japanese: 硫黄島からの手紙) is a 2006 Academy Award and Golden Globe-winning war film directed by Clint Eastwood about the Battle of Iwo Jima from the perspective of Japanese soldiers starring Ken Watanabe and Kazunari Ninomiya among others. It is a complementary film to Eastwood's Flags of Our Fathers which depicts the same battle from the American viewpoint. The film is almost entirely in Japanese language but was made by an American production company. The film was released in Japan on December 9, 2006 and received a limited release in the United States on December 20 in order to compete for the 79th Academy Awards. It was subsequently released in more areas of the US on January 12, and was released in most states by January 19. Personally, I haven't seen this movie yet; but I plan on doing so one day. Eastwood's movies are very good!

300

300 is a 2007 film adaptation of the graphic novel 300 by Frank Miller, itself partly inspired by another film, The 300 Spartans, and is a semi-historical account of the Battle of Thermopylae in 480 BC. The film is directed by Zack Snyder with Frank Miller attached as an executive producer and consultant, and was shot mostly with bluescreen to duplicate the imagery of the original comic book. Spartan King Leonidas (Gerard Butler) and 300 Spartans fight to the last man against Persian King Xerxes (Rodrigo Santoro) and his army of more than one million soldiers, while in Sparta, Queen Gorgo (Lena Headey) attempts to rally support for her husband. The story is framed by a voice-over narrative by the Spartan soldier Dilios (David Wenham). Through this narrative technique, all manner of fantastical creatures are introduced, also placing 300 within the genre of historical fantasy. 300 was released in both conventional and IMAX theaters in America on March 9, 2007. The film broke box office records, although critics were divided over its look and style. Some acclaimed it as an original achievement, while others accused it of favoring visuals over characterization. As well, some controversy arose over its depiction of the ancient Persian and Greek civilizations.
